Three soldiers, two ultras
killed in J&K attack: Reuters

Terrorists stormed an army camp in northern Kashmir on Sunday, killing three soldiers and wounding three others.

Two militants died in the dawn attack on the army base in the frontier Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

"It appears to be a suicide squad. The encounter is going on," a defence official in the state's winter capital Jammu said.

Separatist violence has surged across Kashmir after the biggest guerrilla group called off a cease-fire in August, citing India's refusal to involve arch rival Pakistan in talks to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

Guerrillas have in recent months carried out a string of daring attacks on military installations across the Kashmir valley.

Thirty people, including 17 militants, were killed in explosions and gun-battles in the upsurge of violence, officials said on Saturday.

Nearly a dozen militants groups are fighting New Delhi's rule in Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir in a revolt that is estimated to have killed more than 30,000 people.
