E-Mail this report to a friend

Police averted two tragedies at Sonwar, the high-security cantonment area, and Nundresh Colony in Srinagar by defusing two improvised explosive devices while three militants were among four people killed in the valley since Wednesday evening.

An official spokesman on Thursday said police, acting on specific information, defused an IED in the high security Sonwar area on Wednesday night. The IED weighed 20 kilograms. Another IED was defused at Nundresh Colony, located on the bypass, on Thursday morning.

The spokesman said the body of one Nazir Ahmad Lone was recovered from Kellar in Pulwama district on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, four blasts had rocked the Boulevard Road up to Shalimar area on the banks of the famed Dal lake. However, no one was injured.

In Gurez sector of north Kashmir on Wednesday night, two militants were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the slain militants.

An army patrol was fired upon by militants at Gazriyal in the frontier district of Kupwara on Thursday morning. Troops returned the fire, killing a militant.

Meanwhile, work in all courts in Srinagar remained paralysed in protest against the killing of Baramulla Bar Association general secretary Ghulam Jeelani by unidentified gunmen on July 24.
