Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

German tourist Rolf Harfurth, who was abducted by gunmen early this month near Raugndom village in Kargil, has reportedly been killed by his abductors.

According to top police sources, the gunmen abducted the German trekker after killing three Buddhist monks at Raungdom village on the Zanskar-Kargil road on July 11. They killed him somewhere between Paniker and Kishtawar in the hilly Doda district. Some nomads in the area witnessed the killing.

Police parties have fanned out in the area to search for the body. Sources said the tourist was shot after a scuffle. Sources said the gunmen were taking him to Kishtawar. No group has yet admitted responsibility.

Harfurth had reached Zanskar on July 10 and stayed in Hotel Ibex. The next day he left for Kargil in a truck. Police said some militants also boarded the truck. At Raungdom, they were stopped by a group of Buddhist monks. The gunmen opened fire killing three of them on the spot and later fled in the truck . After travelling some distance the militants asked the driver to stop and got down taking the German along.
