1975 accord should be basis for autonomy: Manmohan Singh

E-Mail this report to a friend

Senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh on Saturday said the 1975 accord signed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and then Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah should be the basis for autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir.

"We (the Congress) recognise that J & K has special problems and that the state needs autonomy, but the question is the extent of autonomy. We feel that what was decided in 1975 is a good basis as to how to go about it," he told reporters at Doddaballapur, near Bangalore.

Singh criticised the government's handling of the issue, saying, "J&K government says the autonomy report was sent to the Government of India in May 1999, but we have Home Minister L K Advani saying a few days ago that he was not aware of it."
