He said the militants, believed to be of a suicide squad, stormed into the Shattloo army camp in Panzalla around 0400 hours IST.

The attack led to an encounter inside the camp manned by Rashtriya Rifles personnel, he said.

He said Major Maninder Singh and a rifleman were killed in the shootout.

The army has laid siege to the area to flush out the militants.
