Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The police has recovered the body of missing German tourist Harfurth Rolf from Nunkun range in Zanskar, Kargil district, a senior police officer confirmed.

He said the body has been brought to Kargil.

The body, he said, bore three bullet wounds.

The officer said that militants who abducted the tourist near Raungdom after killing three Buddhist monks shot Rolf in the head and chest.

The body, he said, was later thrown in a drain in the Nunkun range.

Local police, with the help of shepherds, had searched the area for days.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killing.

The body will be brought to Srinagar on Friday and handed over to German embassy officials.
