NEW YORK

'India-Pakistan: How Close to a Nuclear Showdown' is the subject of a panel discussion at the World Policy Institute at the New School University here.

Among the participants at the October 21 event is Sumit Ganguly, professor of political science at Hunter College/Graduate Center CUNY and Fellow at the Center for International Security and Co-operation at Stanford University.

Ganguly is the author of The Crisis in Kashmir: Portents of War, Hopes for Peace.

There is Paul Bracken, professor of political science and management at Yale University, and the author of Fire in the East: The Rise of Asian Military Power and the Second Nuclear Age.

Mira Kamdar, senior fellow at WPI, and co-director of the Program on Emerging Powers will moderate the discussion.

New fears of nuclear escalation in South Asia have arisen in the wake of India and Pakistan conducting nuclear tests last May, the most recent confrontation in Kashmir, and India's announcement of a proposed national nuclear arms policy to provide a minimum credible deterrent.

What are the chances of a nuclear arms race or even a nuclear war between India and Pakistan? What might the effect of developments in South Asia have on the spread of nuclear arms throughout the world? With a visit by President Clinton planned for the near future, what role can the United States be expected to play to defuse tensions in the region?

The discussion will take place between 6-7.30 pm at 66 W 12th St, Room 510.
