Snow slows Shimla

Life was disrupted in Shimla and the tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh following moderate to heavy snowfall on Thursday night.

The snowfall affected power and water supply and telecommunication services and hampered the movement of vehicular traffic at various places.

Shimla and its adjoining areas experienced moderate snowfall on Thursday night. Several roads in the district, particularly in interior areas, were blocked. The 320km India-Tibet road was inaccessible beyond Dhalli in Shimla town.

Cold wave conditions prevailed in parts of south-west Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, north Gujarat region and north-central Maharashtra.

Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in the hills of west Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra, Kutch, Konkan, Vidarbha and Marathwada. They were below normal in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra, Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Night temperatures were appreciably above normal in Kashmir and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, and above normal in north-west Rajasthan.

They were normal in the rest of the country except for Arunachal Pradesh from where data were sparse.

Rain or snow is likely at many places in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, and at a few places in the hills of west Uttar Pradesh. Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala and Lakshadweep, and at isolated places in the plains of Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
