Rains ease dry winter in Kashmir

The higher reaches in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh had snowfall, while the plains in the north-west region were lashed by intermittent rain since Tuesday night, intensifying the cold wave.

High-altitude areas in the tribal districts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur and the Pangi valley of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh experienced another spell of snowfall since Tuesday night. The mercury hovered between minus eight and minus 12 degrees Celsius.

The sprawling Dhauladhar ranges overlooking the Kangra valley and the 13,050-feet Rohtang Pass, the gateway to the Lahaul valley, also experienced snowfall.

High-altitude areas in the Kashmir valley, including Gulmarg, Khilanmarg, Tangmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam, had snowfall. The famous Amarnath cave shrine too received snow.

Srinagar reported 1mm rainfall till 0830 hours IST while Jammu had 1.6mm.

A report from Simla said the capital town of Himachal Pradesh and its adjoining areas had an overcast sky, with icy cold winds sweeping across the town, causing the mercury to dip sharply. The minimum temperature declined to 4.3 degrees.

The famous tourist resorts of Wildflower Hall, Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda in Simla district and the key tourist resort of Manali in Kullu were in the grip of intense cold wave.

Cold-wave conditions also prevailed in parts of Assam and Meghalaya.

Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in parts of east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Telangana, and below normal in south interior Karnataka and parts of Manipur, Orissa, Bihar, Rayalaseema and the remaining parts of Telangana.

They were appreciably above normal in parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh, and above normal in south Gujarat.

They were normal in the rest of the country except for Arunachal Pradesh from where the data were sparse.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at many places in Punjab, at a few places in west Rajasthan, and at isolated places in Haryana and east Rajasthan.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.

Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, and at isolated places in east Uttar Pradesh, west Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
