Priest of peace beaten up in Kerala

E-Mail this report to a friend

An Islamic scholar, who was on a self-driven mission against religious fundamentalism, was attacked in Kerala's Kannur, allegedly by National Defence Force activists.

Reports said P K Mohammed Farooq, 34, was returning home from his routine Quran class when the assailants, apparently agitated over his campaign for religious tolerance, beat him up with iron rods.

Farooq, a homeopathy practitioner, was admitted to the district government hospital with injuries on head and legs.

The police have registered a case. No arrest had been made yet.

Farooq was expelled from the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-iIlami about three years ago. He had been conducting Quran classes as part of a campaign for religious tolerance.
