CPM asks President to deliberate carefully on new ordinances

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Communist Party of India-Marxist today urged President K R Narayanan to consider the matter seriously before approving the proposed Prasar Bharati bill, the Patents Act and the Companies Act that have been cleared by the Union cabinet.

In a statement, the CPI-M politburo opposed the ordinances, saying they sought to enforce the legislations by bypassing Parliament.

The Bharatiya Janata Party had always vociferously opposed promulgation of ordinances when it was in the opposition. But now it sought to rule the country by the same ''undemocratic'' methods, the statement said.

The party also opposed the government's decision to buy back shares in public sector undertakings, saying this could be counter-productive. It asked the government to abandon the move in the interest of national economy and called upon other political parties to oppose the government's decision that could ruin the PSUs.
