Naga litterateur-politician Paira passes away

Noted litterateur, social worker and politician Govinda Chandra Paira died at his Dimapur residence yesterday after a prolonged illness.

He was 82, and is survived by three sons and two daughters.

Born in 1917 in Kohima, Paira began his career as a teacher in 1937. He also served in the British Indian army in 1943 as a clerk.

At 20, he wrote Sapukp Aru Smriti in Awahan, Moromor Parakhi and Phan Aru Prithivi, and won a literary award from the Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Paira was elected for two terms to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from Dimapur-1 constituency in 1964 and 1974.

Chief Minister S C Jamir and some Cabinet ministers were among those who attended his funeral.
