Trial begins in Rajiv Gandhi Transport Corporation corruption case

The trial in the Rs 15.8 million corruption case involving the Rajiv Gandhi Transport Corporation against former All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam minister K A Sengottaiyan began today with the examination of witnesses.

The defence and the prosecution examined two witnesses -- former transport department secretary Madhavan Nair and former public secretary Devaraj -- before special judge P Anbazhagan about irregularities in the purchases made by the now defunct corporation.

The judge has posted the case to January 22 for further hearing. In all, 78 witnesses have to be examined in this case.

Meanwhile, examination of witnesses in the Jeeva Transport Corporation case, which involves irregularities in the printing of bus tickets to the tune of Rs 21.8 million and the Rs 7.54 million Anna Transport Corporation corruption case continued in two other courts.

Sengottaiyan and the other accused, including Sethuraman, Natarajan Ezhil and Veerappan, had appeared before one court after another as all three cases were taken up on the same day.
