The BJP made inroads into this constituency that favoured the BLD/JD, in 1991, before losing it to the the JD's Surendra Yadav in 1996. In the second spot was the BSP's Ram Prasad Choudhary, who lost by 43,000 votes. Interestingly, even when it had won in 1991, the BJP had won just 26.5 % of the vote, and when it lost in 1996 it had won 21.06 % of the vote.
