The first MP to be elected from here was Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in 1957. The Jan Sangh MP lost in 1962, and won the seat once again in 1967. Nanaji Deshmukh was elected from here in 1977, in the Janata wave, as the BLD candidate. The next time the BJS/BJP came good here was in 1991, when Satyadev Singh won from here, and in 1996 he managed to retain the seat, defeating the SP's Akbal Husain by 58,000 votes. In the third position, surprisingly, was an Independent, Rizwan Zahir, who won almost 100,000 votes.
