The JS emerged as the main challenger to the Congress from 1957 onwards, trailing the party the next round as well. The next three elections were then won by the party, before the seat reverted to the Congress with whom it stayed till 1991. In 1996, the BJP first won the seat, defeating the Congress by around 81,000 votes.
