Baburao Paranjape, then of the Jan Sangh, was defeated by the Congress candidate in 1971, but he kept at it. In 1984, once again he was routed by the Congress, and in 1989 his perseverance paid off when he won 55.5 % of the vote. In 1991, again he was sent home by the Congress, but he was back in 1996, winning 49.09 % of the vote. There was a Gandhi, too, in the fray from here, in 1980, contesting on the Janata Party ticket. His name: Rajmohan Gandhi.
