The Jan Sangh had come runner-up twice in the past, but none of the losers had the panache of the BJP loser from here in 1984: Uma Bharati. She bounced back in 1989, winning a whopping 61 % of the votes, and has retained the seat ever since. In 1996 her tally of votes was only 45 %, but she defeated her Congress rivals by more than 100,000 votes.
