Bansi Lal made his electoral debut on the Congress ticket in 1977 and was swept aside in the Janata wave, but he made his parliamentary debut in 1980 and represented the seat till the 1989 election. After that, his Haryana Vikas Party retained the seat in the 1991 and 1996 elections, with the Congress showing little sign of revival.
