At a time when the ST tag had not been given to it, the constituency had strong links with the princely family of the Gaekwads. Later, in 1989, the constituency elected N J Rathawa on the Janata Dal ticket, and stuck by him when he contested on the Janata Dal-Gujarat ticket in 1991. In 1996, the electorate had no hesitation in reaffirming its faith in him when he contested on a Congress ticket.
