Rajasekhar 'Nehru' Devnieni, the NTR-TDP candidate, bunged the spanner in the works, winning 169,199 votes (19.21%) and taking the election from Rao who had won the contest for the TDP five years earlier. The combined TDP vote (51.39%) was enough to deny P Upendra, the former I&B minister, victory, but that was not to be. TDP-Congress-TDP-Congress pattern evident since 1984. One of those rare Indian consitutencies where a candidate -- K L Rao, the then Union minister -- was elected unopposed (1967).
