EC seeks urgent law and order reports from nine states

Following a detailed review of the law and order situation in the country, the Election Commission has sought 'special reports' from nine states within 48 hours.

The states concerned are Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

Deputy Election Commissioner Subas Pani told a news conference in Delhi that the Commission had reiterated its instructions about restricting criminals, depositing licensed arms and seizure of unlicensed ones, and a detailed and continuous review of law and order all over the country.

The Commission, he said, has ordered the immediate transfer of seven officers of the irrigation department of Mauganj, in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, and sought compliance by 1700 hours on February 13.

The action was necessitated following an inquiry by a senior IAS officer into complaints of partisan conduct by these officers.

The Commission also postponed polling in the Raibag assembly segment of the Chikkodi parliamentary constituency in Karnataka from February 16 to February 22. This was done in view of a major local festival the area.

February 22 is also a polling day in Karnataka.
