The Englishman who started it all...

An old story, we are about to feed you, readers.

About an English man called A O Hume. And his founding the Indian National Congress.

Now, what on earth was his inspiration for the INC?

According to Hume's book, The rising tide, he was prompted by the success of the Bharatiya Rakshak Sena, comprising local Thakurs loyal to the British, which he raised in Etwah, Uttar Pradesh, during the unsettled times of 1857, motivated the setting up of the Congress in 1885.

Ironically enough, the INC that Hume founded became the principal driving force behind the freedom struggle at a later stage.

Hume, however, had only intended the Congress to be a "safety valve" for faithful Indians to air their grievances and save the British rulers from a repeat of the 1857 revolt.
