Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones turn to their online journals to keep in touch when travelling
Claim to fame:
Daughter of acclaimed sitarist Ravi Shankar. Her album 'Live at Carnegie Hall' has received a nomination in the 'Best World Music Album' category for the Grammy Awards this year.
How Net savvy are you?
I am a Net addict. I am hooked online almost all the time. I don't use the Net much for work as much as I use it to keep in touch with friends and family via email, chat, messengers and my Web cam.
My time online depends on whether I am travelling. I haven't been online in India as connection and speeds are quite slow. But my dad is completely computer phobic. So, it's usually my mom who reads out my messages and my emails out to him.
What else do you enjoy doing online?
I shop a lot online -- especially when I am on the road. I shop via Guess and Victoria's Secret. And since one can return goods, if one is unhappy with them within three months, I have never had a bad experience.
What are your favourite sites?
I usually rely on Google for everything. I also have my own site anoushashankar.com, which has an online journal where I maintain a diary about my tour, concerts and other performances.
In fact, both Norah and I have Web sites and I usually keep in touch with her by reading her online journal on her site especially when I am travelling.
Have you ego surfed?
Yes I do, sometimes. In fact, I find a lot of my name being mentioned on Indian sites and Indian news press cuttings. Sometimes, it's a bit strange. Especially when you know that you really have not granted an interview or spoken to that person.
What do you like and hate most about the Internet?
What I like about the Internet is the information and the way one can keep in touch with everyone over the world. What I hate about it is that it's taken away the romance of receiving a letter. Today, even if I get mail from India or Japan, they look the same. Opening an envelope and reading a handwritten letter has its own charm.
Do you get a lot of fan email?
I do. Some of it is nice and sweet. I ignore the offensive emails and the others I report to the police! But I am quite far behind on replying to fan emails. In fact, I did reply to a lot of it myself earlier. Now, I just keep it short and sweet. But it's bizzare to get really long emails and seven page letters from fans.
What about music?
I do check sites like Mp3.com to catch up on other musicians. I am keen about to find out the latest news. But I don't really do any work online or download music!
Any celebrity you would like to chat online with?
No one. I would rather meet them in person.
