The Warrior emerges victorious

Director Asif Kapadia has bagged an award for his debut feature film The Warrior - a film set in feudal India.

Kapadia was awarded the Sutherland Trophy for the most original and imaginative debut feature film, at the closing ceremony of the 45th Regus London Film Festival on Thursday.

"The jury found it tremendously difficult to choose a winner as the shortlist was of an exceptionally high standard this year," said festival director Adrian Wootton. "However, there was a unanimous feeling that The Warrior was superbly directed, written and performed, and it stood out as the strongest and most powerful film. It is a mesmerising achievement with a real poetic vision."

The film tells the story of a lone warrior who renounces his profession as an enforcer to a local lord following a mystic experience. He flees his desert home in Rajasthan and embarks on a journey to the Himalayas. The London-born director's short film Sheep Thief was widely acclaimed three years ago.
