Amitabh Bachchan's bank accounts attached

The income tax authorities have attached Amitabh Bachchan's bank accounts and his bungalow in Bombay to recover tax dues worth Rs 132.5 million, Minister of State for Finance Dhananjaya Kumar told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday .

Kumar said the IT authorities have also attached IDBI bonds worth Rs 2.5 million and 25,000 shares of IPCA Laboratories Limited which the actor owned.

Following the move, Bachchan paid the tax man Rs 1.5 million in February, including the entire demand of Rs 399,000 for the assessment year, 1995-96, the minister said.

Bachchan has been allowed to pay the balance through instalments of Rs 250,000 per month, Kumar said, adding that the actor's petition for stay of recovery was rejected.

The minister said the Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited also had outstanding tax dues of Rs 181.8 million. However, he said the company did not own any immovable property or any liquid assets from which the tax dues could be recovered.

He said the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction has declared ABCL a sick unit.
