'Government is committed to private airports'

Aviation Minister Ananth Kumar today said the Union government was committed to establishing international airports in five major centres in the country, including Bangalore.

The ministry would pursue the matter vigorously. The other centres are Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Amritsar and Guwahati. "We want these airports with private participation and we are committed to this," he added.

He said his ministry would have a chain of cargo complexes across the country to promote exports and increased flow of commodities. "We require smaller aircraft with both cargo and passenger configuration," he added.

Every regional centre would have cargo complexes so that the country could use the civil aviation infrastructure as a precursor for enhancing the agricultural produce exports potential, he added.

Kumar said there was need for floricultural, horticultural and aquaculture products, besides agricultural produce to tap the vast regional, national and international markets.
