Samvat 2054 closes on a subdued note; Sensex down nine points, 2848.11

Samvat 2054 ended on a subdued note with pivotals registering marginal losses at the Bombay Stock Exchange following lack of buying support from institutional investors today.

The market closed at 2 pm to faciliate badla trading in view of tomorrow's holiday. Most of the market players were busy in squaring up their positions in view of the last day of trading cycle as well as the end of the Samvat 2054.

The FIIs made purchases in Bajaj Auto while the domestic institutional investors stayed away from active buying, they said.

Reflecting the trend, the 30-scrip BSE Sensex opened at 2889.70 points, touched the day's high of 2895.57 points, fell to touch the day's low of 2837.98 before closing at 2848.11 points, showing a net loss of 9.16 points over the previous close of 2857.27 points.

The broad-based BSE-100 index also declined by 7.75 points to 1269.53 from the previous close of 1277.28 points.

Trading volume on the BSE went under the Rs 10 billion level and stood at Rs 9.46 billion.

Infotech giant Satyam Computer topped the list of turnover by registering Rs 2.06 billion, ITC Rs 1.01 billion, Zee Telefilms Rs 953 million, Pentafour Software Rs 755.2 million and SBI Rs 743.4 million.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters led by Reliance (rs 425.3 million), Telco (Rs 260.6 million), Castrol India (Rs 228.5 million), Tata Tea (Rs 213.7 million), MTNL (Rs 162.4 million), Dr Reddy's (Rs 154.9 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 150 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 133.6 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 130.7 million) and L&T (Rs 122.8 million).
