Monsanto claims it is clean, eyes plant gene protection process

US-based Monsanto company national marketing manager Mark W Wells has clarified that his company had never used the gene protection technology or the terminator gene process in any of its products.

He said in Bangalore today the so-called terminator seed did not exist in reality. However, Monsanto was making a bid to acquire the Delta and Pine Land technology which had applied for a conceptual patent. The idea was to develop a process that would provide gene protection in plants, in this case tobacco, a commonly used experimental plant.

However, it was premature to comment on this as it was still very much theoretical and not proven as yet.

He clarified that Monsanto would not provide any technology that would have adverse impact on the environment. Its new technologies were monitored and supported by the government regulatory bodies.

Mahyco Monsanto Biotech (India) Private Limited managing director Dr M D Sharma said the Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company, a joint venture company with Monsanto, had developed 330 hybrid varieties of various crops and it was the first to introduce male sterile hybrid cotton seeds in the world.
