A Pakistani-origin doctor who was arrested in August with two others in connection with an Al Qaeda plot to bomb targets within and outside Canada has been released on bail by a court in Ottawa.

Khurram Syed Sher, a Canadian-born physician who appeared on the reality show Canadian Idol in 2008, was granted bail by the court on Wednesday on bonds worth $183,000 (about Rs 80.77 lakh).

Sher, 28, a resident of Ontario, Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26, believed to be born in India, and Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 30, were arrested under Project Samosa by police in Toronto and charged with having links with senior Al Qaeda members in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.

"It's going to take some time to sink in," Sher's lawyer Anser Farooq told reporters after his client was released on bail.

Farooq said their goal is to get the case moving along so Sher can clear his name. He said he will push to the Crown to reassess their case against Sher because he feels there isn't enough evidence that implicates him, Ottawa Sun reported.

While the second alleged co-conspirator Ahmed was granted bail last month, the third suspect Alizadeh remains in custody.

The trio was charged with conspiring to build bombs for attacks in Canada and raise money to fund improvised-explosive-device attacks on Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

The police had refused to identify the targets of the alleged terrorists, saying that information would come out in court. They had said that the trio were in possession of a horde of material for making improvised explosive devices, including schematics, videos, drawings, instructions, books and electrical components.

During raids on the homes of the suspects, authorities said they also seized more than 50 electronic circuit boards that could be used in remote detonators.
