June 16, 2010 09:13 IST

US Vice President Joseph Biden has said America needs to keep its graph of progress going up so as to ensure that it keeps its "top dog" status over China and India intact. "You might call that chauvinism. I call it a necessary reality," Biden said in his address to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Issues Conference in washington as he emphasised the need to retain America's leadership in a world where emerging economies are fast occupying space.

In his speech, Biden "talked about the need to continue to make progress to ensure that the US is top dog over China and India," said a poll report from the event. Biden also resorted to a 'swadeshi' call, exhorting people to buy American cars. "If all of you in this room would drive American cars, and only American cars, they could pay back that loan a lot quicker," said the report.

Besides, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Congressman Chris Van Hollen, the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were also present on the occasion. Hollen said "the Vice President has been working hand in hand with us to make sure we maintain that majority to work with himself and the President". Biden spoke about how bad the economy was when the present government assumed office. One of the "first serious discussions Barack and I sat in on" in Chicago, were discussing whether Obama would have to declare a bank holiday after he was sworn in, he said.
