Shaheed (1948)

Dilip Kumar's tryst with tragedy started with this patriotic drama set at the time of the Quit India Movement and the turbulent, violent times that followed.

He played Ram, the nationalist son of police chief Raibahadur Dwarkadas (Chandramohan). He leaves home and joins a terrorist group, while his lady love Sheela (Kamini Kaushal) does her best to shield him from the law.

Eventually, she is married off to a villainous cop and Ram is arrested for his anti-national activities. His reformed, repentant father defends him in court, but cannot prevent him from being hanged.

This film, along with Mela (where he loses Nargis to another man), which released the same year, laid the foundation
of Dilip Kumar's screen image of the doomed hero.
