Govinda also started chasing the big bucks. The ad endorsements, TV show hosting and umpteen personal appearances were bad enough, especially since he couldn't seem to make the right, quality choices.

But then, he made the classic mistake that so many stars make at that point in their careers: He tried to become a movie tycoon.

He began to produce and distribute his own films. He was already 'packaging' his projects -- putting together the combination of director-heroine-team that suited him best.

That was bad enough because it meant that he was choosing the most mediocre, easily available people just to suit his own date schedule and ego.

    That was a creative mistake.

But to produce and distribute his own films was a business mistake. A huge one. Very few stars have made a major success of handling the business side of their careers. That's because they're stars, actors, not businessmen.

Rani Mukherji and Govinda Shah Rukh Khan today is probably one of the rare exceptions who seems to be as savvy at managing his companies as he is at managing his career choices. Even Ajay Devgan's attempt at doing a Raju Chacha was worth admiring for his sheer guts.

Govinda, on the other hand, neither attempted nor succeeded. He simply churned out movies.

He just pulled out the same predictable fare and expected it to bring in the big money that his producers and distributers had earned over the years.

He forgot in the process that for every money-spinning hit, a distributor or producer can have half a dozen flops. And while a series of flops may hurt a businessman badly, it can wipe out a star.

Unfortunately for him, Govinda is a genuinely talented star performer, a true entertainer who ought to concentrate on his career and choices rather than on money making.

But he forgot this. Just as he forgot that it was Govinda the star who had made him what he was today, not Govinda the producer or distributor.
