RK's choice

The Kapoors are firing on all cylinders.

Shah Rukh Khan. Click for bigger pic!
Rishi, Rajeev and elder brother Randhir are screening a great many scripts to find the best one for their next venture. The film will most likely be directed by Daboo. And it's expected to star Shah Rukh Khan. No less.

The Kapoors have this shrewd idea that this man could pull them through a dicey time.

Randhir himself has put his acting plans on the backburner -- he was slated to return to acting in 1998 with Ladies Only and Mother '98. The former's been delayed and, going by all we hear, we'd be lucky -- if lucky is the word -- if the latter is screened this century.

So right now the Kapoors are leafing through endless pages of dialogue and hoping that, with SRK, will see them through.

The way it used to be

Rishi Kapoor. Click for bigger pic!
You know how Holi used to be in the days of Raj Kapoor. If you don't, no matter; we're telling you, aren't we?

It used to be a day of colour and revelry, when stars and their friends were dunked into drums of colour and where bhang and food were never in short supply. Fun, as it were. Hell, even the national television used to make a ritual of covering it every year.

Spurred by the idea Amitabh Bachchan, Subhash Ghai, Ashok Shekhar, Sudhakar Bokade, Manish Goswami, all tried to organise similar dos. All pale shadows before the original.

But after the goons and the income tax department pounced on the acting community, the filmwallahs have keep their joys private, organising some very quiet parties, the kind where people go Shhhhhh! if anyone shouted Holi Hai! or something.

Which was why only two Holi bashes were held this year, and not too many people were invited.

Neither Rajeev nor Rishi can be the kind of showman their father was, says one observer, ruing the passing of the good old days. But it might be a good thing, you know. With discretion being the better part of... Oh, you know!

On the love trail

Kajol. Click for bigger pic!
News of the honeymoon couple now comes from alien shores. Indians in both New Zealand and Australia have claimed they have spotted the love birds. But that could be like Rajiv Gandhi's killers being spotted on a Bombay suburban train. Improbable but, well, possible.

Ajay and Kajol are apparently mixing business with pleasure, looking for a few locations for their Dil Kya Kare. For the nonce the duo will be concentrating on.

The two stars, who were married on February 24, first headed for Paris and then went on a small tour of the rest of Europe. They are headed now for Egypt and we've had readers writing in desperately to inquire if they are to step into Alexandria. Though their travel agent has yet to confirm this, they are expected to go no farther than Cairo. Worse luck.

That's my man!

Shilpa Shetty. Click for bigger pic!
Shilpa Shetty really marks out her turf. Which is perhaps why she makes sure she's seen in the company of Akshay Kumar almost all the time.

Akshay rarely used to make public appearances with his ex, Raveena Tandon. Rumour has it that it is Mama Shetty, being a bit more on the conservative side, who wants the betrothal made official.

In case you didn't know, she is said to be a good astrologer who had predicted in film magazines that 1997 and 1998 were great years for her daughters. Going by Shilpa's performance in those years, we thought she'd made a boo-boo. Now we know what she meant.

Meanwhile, Shilpa's next effort, Dhadkan, with Sunil Shetty and beau Akshay is on the verge of completion. That should give us an idea about her professional future too.

Aditya goes a -wooing

Aditya Chopra
The Chopra boys are busy with something or the other these days.

Aditya is apparently been roaming around a Punjabin, with looks that could reduce the Antarctic ice shelf to icky ooze. Daughter of a rich, rich NRI, we are told.

Meanwhile brother Uday is honing his skills at Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting classes and at some dancing classes we know not the name of. This, despite the fact that Papa Yash hasn't given him the green signal to act in the family's next venture.

"He is a good actor and has a great attitude. He is also doing a lot to improve his looks," we were told when we ventured to inquire.

Since that is what they all say, we've decided it's better to wait and w.

Abhi nahi and all that...

Kareena Kapoor. Click for bigger pic!
Well, the news is that J P Dutta's Refugee is complete and only the post-production fine-tuning remains to be done. So if you hear a sudden announcement regarding the film sometime soon, don't be surprised.

Meanwhile, the hero of the film, Abhishek Bachchan, is openly moving about with Kareena Kapoor. Nothing between them, really. Abhishek is actually believed to be close to her sister Karisma. Kareena, we believe, is max a go-between.

We've told you about how he and Karisma have been making cow eyes at each other till their respective paters popped into the picture. The ancestors in question waggled their fingers disapprovingly and told them to put their ardour on ice till sometime later.

Randhir Kapoor even had a talk with Abhishek at China Garden, a noted Chinese restaurant that the elder has a weakness for. The dad has asked Bachchan Jr to let Karisma do a few more films before they finally thought about anything more permanent.

The youngster wagged acquiescence and then minimised contacts with the swain, relying, as we mentioned, on the sister to cart the love mail around.
