Salman's squalls

Salman Khan. Click for bigger pic!
Even the best of relationships run into bad weather at times. Take the case of Salman Khan and the Barjatyas. The man who is shooting in Rajasthan for the Barjatyas' film , Hum Hain Saath Saath, wanted to return to Bombay for a few days.

But the Barjatyas didn't like the idea, since they wanted him to be shooting every day. Salman may not have minded had Karisma Kapoor not been permitted to go back to Bombay for a few days.

Salman felt he deserved better since he was an old friend, having started his career in their Biwi Ho To Aisi, following it up with Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. But director Sooraj Barjatya is a sweet talker and cajoled Salman into quiet co-operation and working at the remaining month of shooting that's left.

And Salman doesn't quite know whether he should be hurt or happy.

Urmila sizzles again

Urmila Matondkar has started shooting for Raj Kumar Santoshi's China Gate. And when we popped in, she was doing a dance that was sen-sa-tion-al, to say the least. For Urmila sizzled and sets soon got unnaturally warm.

We'd been hearing rumours that Urmila had been roped in only to antagonise Mamta Kulkarni who made life very uncomfortable indeed for Santoshi. But someone close to Santoshi, stood by the director:

"No, it was nothing like that. Urmila is hot property today," he said, implying, of course, that Mamta wasn't. And, well, she isn't too. Well, since that was agreed upon, he said that was why Urmila had been asked to do the song. Her guest appearance in Chota Chetan had done the film a power of good, he pointed out.

But, we inquired, if it was a question of a song in a revealing outfit, wasn't Mamta better qualified, we asked. He had no answer there, of course.

Border and beyond

J P Dutta
J P Dutta is to start shooting for Refugee by the end of next week. He had some scouting to do before he found the perfect locations for the shots he had in mind.

Refugee, a launch pad for Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor, also stars Jackie Shroff and Sunil Shetty.

Refugee, we have slowly learnt over time, is about the independence of Bangladesh.

And so who does Abhishek play? A Pakistani. A Bangladeshi?

Of course, papa's pal, Bal Thackeray, is averse to both these varieties of human beings, so wonder what Abhishek will finally play...

Ravs' woes

Raveena Tandon. Click for bigger pic!
Raveena Tandon may have straightened out considerably, but producers still treat her like an old shoe.

So she's often either sidelined or chucked out altogether from films. Sometime back, we talked about how she was sidelined in Pardesi Babu. Then came news that she was dropped from Love Today, to be replaced by Tabu.

Tabu, the producers said, was a better actress. Raveena was pretty peeved about it, more so since a southern film-maker too dropped her after finding out she was hot property no more.

As happened when the producers of Pardesi Babu riled her, Raveena took on the producers of Love Today too, storming into their office and making her vocal point.

She was promptly offered another role -- in their next film. But since she'd already lost the southern venture, Ravs is not really mollified.

Promising stuff

Rishi Kapoor. Click for bigger pic!
The RKs seem to be in on a good thing on Aa Ab Laut Chalein. Already, it has reportedly shaped up well and promises to do much good for the family fortunes.

All RK films have been winners. Even Prem Granth, a relatively weak film, earned plenty of money for them.

According to Suman Ranganathan, who plays a sexy NRI in AALC, Rishi Kapoor is doing a great job of directing the film.

She cited the time when, during a song sequence in a dandiya scene, Rishi himself broke into a dance with the other artistes. "He's so committed," she gushed.

Suman, meanwhile, wising up to the needs of the industry, has roped in Govinda's secretary Shashi Sinha to handle her work.

About the same thing Madhuri Dixit did once, roping in Anil Kapoor's secretary Rikku to do her work. And didn't he get her Tezaab opposite Anil?

So, Sinha willing, Suman hopes that she will have roles after the NRI one too.

Shooting herself in the foot

Mahima Chaudhary. Click for bigger pic!
There are always shooting stars in cinema, you know. And Mahima Chaudhary of Pardes fame appears to be aspiring to become one. Nay, even working towards it.

Mahima hasn't had a single release after that first big hit. But her life has never been short on controversy recently.

First there was the trouble she had trouble with Subhash Ghai. Then she was chucked out from another film for throwing tantrums. And when she went abroad, she had this nasty fight with Karisma Kapoor.

It is time she either cut down on the aggro. Or else, she's in big danger of being cut off by the industry altogether.
