The meeting was the last one of the day and on the way from Dhar to Indore, Singh was on his cellular phone for half the ride.

His night halt was at the VIP guest house in Residency Kothi, Indore -- a magnificent mansion from the days of the Raj.

The chief minister was up very late, closeted in meetings and left early in the morning to meet people in the city before going to the airport to receive Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

"I have been in politics for almost 30 years, I have a thick skin," he had laughed at the rally in Dhar while taking on BJP chief ministerial aspirant Uma Bharti's charges about his tenure.

If Digvijay Singh wins the battle for Madhya Pradesh -- only one election survey gives him the edge; the rest say Uma Bharti will be the state's next chief minister -- he will have the last laugh.
