Statistical highlights

Mohandas Menon

5th Test, Day 5 at Kingston

Statistical highlights - 5th day at Kingston

** India's total of 252 was its 21st score over 250-plus in the fourth innings of a Test match. The team has won just three matches, lost nine and drawn nine matches (including a tie) while doing so.

** Meanwhile India have made 250-plus scores in the fourth innings of a Test match against West Indies on five occasions. This Test match was the first of which they have lost. In the earlier four matches India have won one and drawn three.

** Incidentally, India's total of 252 was the sixth highest score made by a team while batting in the fourth innings of a Test match at this venue.

** This was West Indies' 27th win at home in 40 series since 1929-30. The home team has only lost seven and drawn six. The only two visiting teams who have won a series in the Caribbean in the recent times have been, not surprisingly, Australia (2-1 in 1995) and South Africa (2-1 in 2001).

** Carl Hooper won his first Test series at home as captain. His only other series win came in Zimbabwe (1-0 in the two match series) in July last year.

** India have lost its 15th Test match after inserting the opposition to bat on winning the toss. However, this was Ganguly's first such loss as captain. Meanwhile, this was West Indies' 21st win after being sent into bat after losing the toss. For Hooper it was his first such win as captain.

** India have not won a Test series of five-or-more matches since 1980-81. India had then beaten Keith Fletcher's England 1-0 at home in the six-match Test series.

Since then India have lost to Pakistan 0-3 (in Pak in 1982-83, in 6 Tests); to West Indies 0-2 (in WI in 1982-83, in 5 Tests); to West Indies 0-3 (at home in 1983-84, in 6 Tests); to England 1-2 (at home in 1984-85, 5 Tests); to Pakistan 0-1 (at home in 1986-87, 5 Tests); to Australia 0-4 (in Aus in 1991-92, 5 Tests); to West Indies 0-1 (in WI in 1996-97, 5 Tests) and now the just concluded Test series 1-2.
