1st ODI highlights from Faridabad

Mohandas Menon

** Dinesh Mongia was opening the Indian innings for the first time in his career. He now joins WV Raman, Sourav Ganguly, Vinod Kambli, S Ramesh, Amay Khurasiya, S Sriram and Yuvraj Singh to become the eighth Indian left-hander to open the Indian batting in ODIs.

** The hectic unbeaten partnership of 63 runs between Mohammad Kaif and Ajit Agarkar was the best for the seventh wicket at this ground obliterating the previous best of 29 between the Indian pair of Rahul Dravid and Sameer Dighe against South Africa on 15-3-2000.

** The swashbuckling unbeaten 40 in just 19 balls (S/r: 210.52) by Ajit Agarkar was the second fastest innings of 40 runs or more against Zimbabwe. The fastest still belongs to Agarkar during his unbeaten 67 in 25 balls (S/r: 268.00) at Rajkot on 14-12-2000.

** The third wicket partnership of 111 runs between Alistair Campbell and Andy Flower was the best at this ground. The pair bettered the previous best of 48 runs between VVS Laxman and Dravid in the first innings of this match. The previous best for this wicket before this match was the 37 between South Africans Andrew Hudson and Daryll Cullinan against Australia on 25-10-1996.

** Douglas Marillier (50 in 21 balls) registered the fifth quickest fifty in ODI history. He in fact joins two other batsmen (New Zealand's Lance Cairns and India's Ajit Agarkar) who have also achieved it 21 balls. The record of reaching the quickest fifty in ODIs still remains with Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya, who needed just 17 balls against Pakistan at Singapore (Padang) on 7-4-1996.

** Marillier's fifty was also the quickest against India bettering the 23 ball fifty by Pakistani Salim Malik during his unbeaten 72 at Calcutta on 18-2-1987.

** Marillier also became the first batsman in ODI history to register a fifty while batting at number ten. The previous highest score was the 46 by Pakistani Abdul Razzaq against South Africa at Durban on 3-4-1998. The previous highest score by a Zimbabwean in this position was the unbeaten 19 by Eddo Brandes against Sri Lanka at Worcester on 22-5-1999. Interestingly, the previous highest score by a number 10 against India was also by a Zimbabwe batsman - 29 by Andy Whittall at Bulawayo on 26-9-1998.

** Zimbabwe's 276-9 was the highest score made at this ground bettering India's 274-6 in the first innings. India had earlier just gone past the previous highest team score at this ground which was 273-5 by the West Indies against the home team on 17-10-1994.

** This was Zimbabwe's third victory by one wicket in ODIs. It had beaten India by an identical margin at Jodhpur on 8-12-2000 and also New Zealand at Auckland on 7-1-2001. Meanwhile, this was India's third such defeat. It had lost to Pakistan at Sharjah in 10-4-1986 and to Zimbabwe at Jodhpur on 8-12-2000.

** The home team has now lost four of its five matches at this ground.
