in the new cyber landscape'.

They were unanimous that the expected rapid growth of the Internet in the country, since the ISP business has been freed of a government monopoly, will give India an unprecedented chance to mark itself firmly on the software map.

Earlier, Ashok Desai of Silicon Graphics, Anil Kaul of Oracle Software and Rahul Nanda of Lotus Development spoke on electronic commerce.

The day was opened by addressing cutting-edge topics like 'Building scaleable Web applications, Active X and new technologies.' The presentation was made by Daniel Ingitaraj, a tools product manager with Microsoft. Anudit Vikram, also of Microsoft, spoke on 'Transaction and message queuing'.

Later, Shyam Malhotra of Cyber Media and Ajit Balakrishnan of Rediff On The Net took up the session on 'Practical WWW'. Malhotra cited several examples of Web sites which had done a good job of integrating technology with content.

Balakrishnan, in his presentation, titled 'Confessions of a Web site developer', stressed on the importance of content on a site: "Dynamic content packaged and presented aesthetically is the key to any successful site. No bells and whistles, not too many gimmicks either. And most importantly, every person who sets up his own site must have a USP before he does so. Gone are the days when people rushed to put up their Web site just to have a WWW address on their visiting cards, it's important what you put out there."
