Big DoT revamp is on the cards

A plan to restructure the Department of Telecommunications will be finalised within six months, Minister of Communications Beni Prasad Verma announced at the Economic Editors' Conference in New Delhi last week.

The services wing of DoT is likely to be converted into a corporate entity, Verma said. Another proposal under active consideration is tariff reduction for bulk users of services, DoT Secretary A V Gokak announced.

The Department will also support the ambitious plan of the Andhra Pradesh government by spending Rs 50 million for laying out optic fibre links between the state capital and all district headquarters.

The AP Government is said to be interested in further extending the network beyond district headquarters. DoT has asked the state government to present a detailed report to study the matter further, Gokak said. A national backbone exclusively for data services will be in place by 2002, Gokak said.

To mark Gandhi Jayanthi, schools in 15 villages are to be provided with Internet connections, Verma announced.

Department of Post officials who were also present at the conference, said that the SpeedPost service, the DoP's premium service, earned Rs 650 million in the last financial year.

A tracking system to trace the location of a packet at any given point of time is under implementation, it was announced.
