VSNL launches satellite telephony system in Madras

The public sector Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited today launched in Madras the MINI-M service, the latest offering of Inmarsat, designed to meet specific communication requirements of land mobile users especially in inaccessible areas.

The MINI-M service, which would use the VSNL's land Earth station at Arvi, near Pune, is based upon spot-beam technology, made available by a new generation Inmarsat-3 satellite, belonging to the 79-nation Inmarsat resources upon the Earth's land mass.

An interesting feature of the MINI-M phone is that it weighs only 2 kg, with a size of a PC notebook and supports voice, fax and data communication systems.

Launching the MINI-M service, Inmarsat Western and Central Asia Regional Director Bashir A Patel said the three existing Inmarsat satellites covered 95 per cent of the Earth's land mass. By July next, the coverage would increase to 97 per cent, he added.

The MINI-M Service would enable users to plug into a laptop or a palmtop computer using an interface and have contact with any part of the Earth. It would have 4.8 kbps speed for voice signals and 2.4 kbps for data and fax services.
