VXL offers Windows-cum-UNIX network client

VXL today launched Winlinx, a thin network computing client for Windows and UNIX networks.

Announcing the launch in Bombay, Chairman and Managing Director A V Kasargod said Winlinx is 100 per cent compatible across a full range of applications.

Applications reside and are executed on a server and are accessed by the user as needed rather than managed and maintained on a multitude of individual PCs.

This ensures simpler and effective administration including the ability to control and manage applications and data files for all users on a centralised server resource. The result is network centric multi-user Windows or UNIX environment with lower upfront costs, virtually unrivalled administration and total cost of ownership advantages, he claimed.

"Our customers have been constantly asking for Windows terminals which could also work with UNIX. We saw great opportunity in the upcoming network technology and Winlinx is our first product in that direction, offering total cost of ownership advantages to our valued customers," he said.

M V Shetty said Internet/intranet technologies are becoming a part of corporate networking strategies. Winlinx will address Internet and would expand into other vertical applications with optional packaging browser, emulators or smart cards which are scheduled to be released later.

VXL is also working SCO for NC OS - a network client for SCO UNIX, under the beta test stage. Work is also under progress on Java.

Winlinx is a new breed of network client designed to display and operate under the Windows NT environment. The ICA protocol is a critical component for delivering Windows application to any enterprise desktop. Conceptually similar to the UNIX and X-Windows protocol, ICA allows an application's user interface to execute with minimum consumption of network resources on the Winlinx thin client.
