VSNL readies to build first South Asian telecom hub

The Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited has plans to establish a strategic alliance with BT-MCI and joint venture with Marubeni and IL&FS companies of South Asia to build the first South Asian hub for routing international traffic and to compete with other major telecommunication operators in the global market.

Telecommunications Commission Chairman A V Gokak has said that there is a need to develop transit services to meet the growing demands for international calls in the country.

The proposed hub would enable VSNL to route international traffic between countries providing the benefit of fibre optic technology.

High speed, dedicated, international fibre optic links between the gateways will enable VSNL to further improve their international services to India.

The VSNL has already submitted the details of joint venture to Department of Telecommunication in May last year. They are considering whether the proposed venture is in conformity with the telecommunications policy of the government of India.
