MTNL plans to enter the cable TV business

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited is planning to provide cable television through its telephone network.

The move, mapped out in association with the Telecommunications Consultant India Limited, is awaiting the Telecom Commission's nod.

"We plan to provide multimedia services in Delhi and Bombay," MTNL CMD S Rajagopalan said.

He was hopeful that the commission would clear the proposal.

For MTNL, which has a well-established network in Delhi and Bombay, it will be cost effective to provide multimedia services along with telecom services.

Basic telecom service operators, too, want to provide multimedia services but the Department of Telecommunication has made it clear that their licence does not permit them to do so.
