Oracle 8.0 launched in India

Oracle has announced the launch of Oracle 8.0, the latest version of its information management software that also supports the next generation network computing.

With the world moving from being PC-centric to the network-computing model, Oracle is looking at applications for the NC market, said Vice-President, Advanced Technology and Strategy, Jnan Dash.

Besides the backend database, the company also has a Web application server and systems management tools. Oracle also launched the Network Computer Architecture some time back.

The new features in Oracle 8 include rapid installation apart from the openness and integration that Oracle customers have been enjoying till now. Oracle 8.0 is available in 26 languages on Windows NT, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, IBM SP2, Sequent PTX and Digital Alpha AXP.

The database can be used on single, distributed or clustered NT machines. Oracle is ``evangelising'' the network computing concept, said Anil Kaul, chairman and managing director, Oracle, India. The company has had a hand in creating a blueprint for the NC, which manufacturers refer to.

Currently, there are around 12 manufacturers of the NC device in the country, which is priced at $500 per unit. In a year or two, when the concept catches on, the prices are expected to come down.

In India, Kaul said, Oracle is in talks with various people to manufacture NCs. A final decision would be announced by the end of the year, he said.
