Hughes Network Systems to offer WLL technology in India

A Staff Writer in Bombay

Even as the proposal to implement an indigenously developed technology which can increase India's telephone population by 30 to 40 times gathers dust, a foreign company is already pitching for the sale of a similar technology in the country.

The 'wireless in local loop' technology replaces the last leg of wire, from the local exchange to the subscriber's premises, with wireless transmission. The last leg of cable disappears along with the prohibitive cost of maintaining it. Consequently telephones become cheaper to own and their density goes up.

The WLL technology is available world-wide but Dr Jhunjhunwala of the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras has developed an indigenous WLL which, for no loss in performance, can be built at a third of the cost of such systems elsewhere. His proposal to implement the technology is pending with the authorities.

Now Hughes Network Systems is ready to introduce its 'wireless in local loop' systems in India.

Arunas Slekys, the visiting vice president, Networks Divsion of Hughes Network Systems Inc, said the high capacity digital networks have the capability to provide telephone service for mass market application relieving telephone shortages.

According to Slekys, the HNS system, the GMH 2000 WLL Network is based on the 'time divisible multiple access', or TDMA, technology and the format of IS-136. This format is the TDMA standard approved for mobile and fixed wireless applications.

The GMH 2000 has been approved by the Department of Telecommunications for the validation based on IS-136 TDMA technology.
