Aptech offers BSc from Northumbria

Shariq Siddiqui in Bombay

One of the biggest names in computer training in India, Aptech Limited, has launched yet another international degree program.

The Bachelor of Science (Computing) degree will be available to Indian students from the University of Northumbria, UK, through Aptech. The infotech education company is also inviting admissions to the 1997 batch of the Bachelor of Technology (Computing) degree course from the Open University of British Columbia, Canada. This degree was initiated in 1995.

The degrees are four-year part-time courses. The study material of these programmes includes regular Aptech modules offered at their training centres, starting with computer basics like DOS, Windows and MS Office competence, and goes on through C, C++, UNIX, relational database management to software engineering, with theory lessons on networking and the Internet somewhere along the way.

The study modules from the distance universities comprise of management subjects like accounting, humanities and English.

Aptech Limited's Senior Vice-President Pramod Khera claims the foreign universities have found the Aptech syllabus adequate for a B Tech degree, but required inclusion of management subjects to make the course more comprehensive in keeping with international standards.

Khera claims that in the jobs market Aptech's new degrees would be as attractive as "conventional" international degrees.

The programmes offered by the universities are recognised by their respective governments, he said. Exams for the courses are conducted by Aptech at its Indian centres every year on behalf of the foreign universities. Evaluation is done in India by Aptech faculty and approved by the distance university concerned.

Aptech offers a similar distance learning program in the Middle East, where students can get a Bachelor of Computer Applications degree from the Indira Gandhi National Open University based in Delhi.
