LG Software sets up research 'plaza' at IISc

The 15-month-old Bangalore software development centre of the company has tied up with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, to set up an R&D 'plaza' on the institute campus.

The Advanced Research Centre would showcase LG's IT wares, LGSDC regional managing director Lalit Ahuja has said. The centre will be located at the Superconductor Education Research Centre of the institute and is scheduled to be inaugurated on October 2.

This non-commercial venture would be LG's small, but different, exercise of bringing into India its modern line of technologies, said Ahuja. LG, which is footing the entire bill for the infrastructure, has given a carte blanche towards equipping the new centre, he said.

The proposed lab will undertake research in mobile computing, network PCs, hand-held PCs and Web TV and develop applications and solutions on Java-based technology.

According to Ahuja the proposed research institute "will be a product of joint branding of LG and IISc".

Ahuja said the new centre would also take up sponsored research work from non-LG companies. "We are not interested in a dormant, but vibrant centre."

The company, he said, would not be interested in extending such relationships with other research institutions in the country. "At least not in the near future. We'd rather focus our efforts on one centre of excellence than spread our resources." However, LG has already set up such 'plazas' in collaboration with higher education institutions elsewhere in the world.

Confirming the plan, SERC Chairman Professor N Balakrishnan said the lab would be a common platform for software development and mutually benefit the IISc and the company. It will be accessible to LG employees, institute faculty and post-graduate scholars.

According to Balakrishnan, the institute works closely with the industry and has signed up for similar R&D arrangements with IT companies such as IBM, Tata Consultancy Services and Intel among others.
