HCL, Cisco tie up

The $5 billion Cisco Systems, the global leader in networking and internetworking products, will be undertaking product development in India in association with the HCL group. A dedicated software development centre will be set up by HCL Corporation at Madras.

The development centre will undertake software development work for Cisco's Inter-Operatibility Software (IOS), a network management software that delivers network services and enables networked applications.

Anil Batra, country manager for Cisco's India operations, said "There have been discussions between the corporate office and the HCL group, but nothing has been confirmed as yet." The HCL Corporation official had a similar answer.

According to industry sources, HCL Corporation will staff and run the development centre. They expect over 100 software professionals to be deployed before the end of the current financial year. The facility will be linked to Cisco's development centre in Silicon Valley, California. The HCL group has provided technical expertise for product development to Cisco earlier too. Its subsidiary in the US, HCL America, based in Silicon Valley, has also designed networking products for Cisco.

This project will be set up and managed initially by HCL Corporation and will be later transferred to one of its existing units or spun off as a separate company, according to sources.

The Madras software development facility will focus on product development of IOS, Cisco's software that is loaded on to its networking products. This software is the connecting link between the various networking hardware products of Cisco like routers, hubs, switches and bridges to enable smoother communication between its products.

Cisco has licensed its IOS to competing hardware manufacturers like Alcatel, Ericsson and Northern Telecom, computer manufacturers like Compaq and Hewlett-Packard and also Microsoft and Intel.
