Email this story to a friend. Back to Comdex coverage index The third keynote address for the day was delivered by Tata IBM Limited Managing Director and CEO Ravi Marwaha.

He tried to explain how the Web has become indispensable for the future. "If an organisation is not Web-enabled, it stands the chance of getting disintermediated."

Marwaha pointed to a recent article in Fortune magazine titled 'Internet or Bust', to emphasise the emergence of the Internet and Web as the most important tools for transformation.

E-commerce is on the fast track and $600 billion worth of sales by e-retailing is expected to happen by 2005. Network computing will transform every institution in the world and there will be new winners and losers, he said.

E-commerce will become more popular with the technology for 3D visuals on the Web that will enable navigation of a virtual store. Selection of goods online, payment through debit cards and product delivery to home, will all go into making e-commerce very dynamic, he said.

Information can be connected through trillions of devices and digitisation will lead to greater sharing of knowledge, Marwaha said.
